Caroline Loison takes over as Head of Cheder

The new Head Teacher at Belsize Square Synagogue’s Cheder says she is “hugely excited” to be taking over the role.

Caroline Loison has been a life-long member of the community, attending the Cheder herself before going on to teach there too.  “Appreciating the uniqueness of Belsize Square and understanding its background and traditions, puts me in a particularly good position to recognise what our members and their families are looking for.  I am determined to ensure the Cheder grows and thrives, as it did under our previous Head Teacher Jeanie Horowitz.”

We are holding a Shabbat Kiddush on January 19th to thank Jeanie for her 16 years in charge of the Cheder.  Rabbi Altshuler paid tribute to her for her long and tireless years of dedication:  “She has brought enthusiasm and skills to everything she has done for the congregation and Jewish education, and we will miss her greatly.”

Caroline has been a qualified teacher for 16 years and has taught in both the State and Private sector.  In her various previous roles, she has been a designated Safeguarding Lead at an Independent Prep School, a Governor for six years at a local state school, and more recently, has been working at a Nursery in Mill Hill which has enabled her to understand the Early Years Foundation Stage.

She aims to create an atmosphere at the Cheder that is conducive to both learning and having fun. “Educating the next generation has always been my passion,” she says, “and I can think of nothing better than playing an important role in the education of the children at my own Synagogue, enriching Jewish lives for the better.  Jewish Studies will – of course – be a key part of our Cheder timetable, but we will also be focussing on Hebrew reading to ensure students are ready for Bar or Batmitzvah at Belsize Square.”
